Name: Bryce Pendleton

Age: 36

Physical Description: Average hight and build, the edges of a physically fit body can be see but its been dulled with age and lack of training. He has dark hair cut short (sort of spiky) with a ting of gray in it. He has a heavy 5 o'clock shadow and dark eyes.

Attire: Sturdy work shoes, Heavy dark slacks and leather belt, White under shirt, Rather plain gray-ish button up dress style shirt and tie (the tie is normally pulled loose and one bother why he wears it), Black leather jacket [not sure what time of year this is so jacket only applicable to the season] Beretta 92F handgun (black finish, chambered in 9mm 17 round capacity magazine loaded with stranded 115gr FMJ rounds) kept in a leather shoulder holster rig under his jacket or dress shirt [depends on weather] carries 2 spare loaded mags in a carrier attached to the holster rig.

History: Bryce always wanted to be a cop in the big city, he wanted to catch the bad guy and save the day. We he got his wish he went into law enforcement right out of high school. While on the force he also studied a wide array of criminal and law sciences and later cross trained and worked with the Special Victims Unit and Homicide unit. However Bryce's wish like all wishes from story books came at a cost. He witnessed the worst that people had to offer one another (Rape, Murder, larceny, etc) After working on a rather brutal serial killer he could not take any more of the long hours of work and little to no pay off (From a mix of political/law red tape and lack of information and resources). Bryce left the force and started his own private detective agency in an attempt to spare him self from dealing with the more extreme side of crime (Helping an old lady find out if her pool guy was stealing from her was worlds better then walking into gore spattered gang banger hovels)

Personality: Nihilist, pessimist, loaner are all bits of who Bryce is now. He is not a total party pooper though he wont be the one to tell you that. Though he may seem standoffish or cold he does have a heart (especially to women and children). He normally to take an analytical approach to most things, look it over, figure it out, though he also knows not to completely ignore his gut. He can also be rather pig headed when it comes to issues and what little tact he has left is tossed under foot of a big tall glass of go fuck yourself.

Skills: Above average strength and dexterity, Skilled marksmen and physical fighter (Though not a martial artist or sniper by any means), First aid and CPR certified, Criminal and law knowledge,

Job: Self employed Private Detective

Weakness: A habitual smoker and drinker he sadly fits the role of the chain smoking and flask swigging gumshoes of old. He has to have one or the other at him all times and gets antsy and worse when he can't do one or the other for extended periods. Bryce dislikes being in hospitals, police stations and Cort rooms (to many bad memories attached to them) Though he worked in police units dealing with extreme crime and violence he is not immune to the sights of such, actually sometimes seeing these things can trigger memories of other bad events and scenes and adversely effect him (Frozen in place, 'freak out', possibly even mentally break down) His analytical and rational mind sent also makes him poorly suited to deal with out there concept and situations (Being chased by a freaky guy with a triangle for a head and a huge sword!? Your crazy sir that shit does not happen see? he wont hurt me......)
Currently has miner lacerations, contusions,Whip lash, and concussion from a recent car accident (this is why he is in the hospital)

I see this character as: Provided of a mix of strength and brains, need someone to detain someone? Yo! need someone to look over these document and sus out a message? I will give it a crack! He is tad abrasive so possibly cause friction in the group (more so if there is an ex con or such encountered) He is a tired and strung out PI trying to escape from the world of violence and blood but he can't let go of that inner desire to help people and confront evil.

I hope this guy does not seem to OP with his firearm and such it was just the first character concept that popped into my head when I was thinking of a Silent Hill kinda setting.

I was worried about him being OP, but I think you've given him proper weaknesses to balance him out. I like the way you see this character as well- someone who can handle people and puzzles without losing his mind or giving in to stress. Considering the possibility of people losing their minds or freaking out enough that they might harm themselves it could be a great asset to have someone who can speak with authority and past experience.

I think you've created a well-rounded character who will fit perfectly and gives me a lot to work with.

Glad to hear! I can still remove or alter stuff if you want. Honestly when you told me about this setting the other night this idea popped into my head. I decided to go ahead and write down as I figured him out and let you decide.

As with the skills I can re-write them if need be. I just wanted to show yes he carries a gun and can use it and he knows how arm bar a guy if needed. However with encountering supernatural things these skills will be ttested and or nullified leaving him felling and being vonerable. (I.e. oh a violent gang banger? Hands up pal! A shagoth? OH GOD WHAT IS THIS I DONT EVEN, The bullets they do nothing!)

Because he is entering a hospital, and usually hospitals have a 'No-weapons' policy for anyone not carrying a badge, try to think up a good reason for him to have a weapon inside, okay? I know he was in a car accident, so you could say that he just didn't want to leave a weapon in a car with broken windows (easy access for thieves). He'll need to mention that he has it when he checks in, and might even turn it over. When the hospital shifts to the nightmare realm everything you bring into it will remain. Then you even have a first challenge for him: retrieve the gun.

Oh yes exactly his weapon would be confiscated and locked up somewhere while he was being checked out. No hospital will let him walk around with one unless he was a cop in uniform.

Aha! So you have a very well thought-out character with useful skills and abilities kept in check by weaknesses, but you've also given him something to quest for. Sounds perfect!

That was the idea ya, I was also more trying to give you ideas and stuff to work off of instead of just spelling it all out.

So have a scary other wordy crime gore crime scene appear in a room he is in and watch him flip out.

So ya in short:
Good = combat and logic skills
Bad = psychological and emotional issues, bad habits he needs to keep up

Again the idea stemmed from my limited time playing and watching Silent Hills games. Yes you can fight the monsters but its normally best to run away, and the bigger enemy is the place it self and its twisted nature. So I liked the idea of a guy who has a tormented past (something SH preys on) who in a normal place could Handel and defend him self but that's is diminished or taken away from him by the scary ugy boogys

Also kinda fits for the normal Silent hill/Resident Evil part where the player is scrambling to find a weapon.

Yeah, I just finished Outlast Whistleblower (that game is super fucked up) and Dread Out recently and just loved that whole idea of finding yourself going from reality to something that you just can't describe as reality. I like the fact that Outlast and Amnesia don't give you a weapon, so that's why my characters are unarmed, but I'm really glad you went with the Silent Hill approach because it gives me a larger diversity of creatures and characters.

Well it was only recently I began watching play thoughts of Silent Hill though I remember playing a demo for the original game and it freaking me out. I do like atmospheric games while I don't do much straight up horror some of my favorite games are scary in nature/tone like STALKER or Metro 2033.

Also your setting of going to a hospital in a little nowhere town instantly made me think of the foggy streets of Silent Hill. I just came up with the guy on the spot and decided to start writing him down instead of taking forever to flush it all out.

Well, you have time so you can add whatever you want. The setting will be closer to Silent Hill in most cases. I pick and choose through a variety of different horror games (even Dead Space) just to make sure there is something for every type of character.
